Cebu Quake: University Evacuates, Six Injured in Bogo City

Cebu Technological University Evacuates Campus Following 5.4 Magnitude Earthquake

Students and employees at Cebu Technological University (CTU)-Main Campus in Cebu City gathered in the university courtyard after a magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck the region. In a swift response to ensure safety, university officials immediately suspended classes and work activities. This precautionary measure aimed to protect all students, teachers, and staff from potential hazards.

Injuries and Damage Reported in Bogo City

The earthquake, which occurred at 3:22 PM on Monday, April 6, 2026, in eastern Bogo City, resulted in six individuals sustaining injuries. According to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), preliminary assessments indicate that the injuries were caused by shattered glass from the tremors.

In addition to the injuries, the powerful quake triggered a power outage in Barangay Cogon and Barangay Banban within Bogo City. Beyond Bogo City, the San Remigio Parish building, which had already suffered damage from a previous earthquake, experienced further deterioration. The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) building was also among the structures affected.

Ongoing Assessments and Safety Measures

Ainjeliz Orong, Cebu Provincial Information Officer, stated that authorities are currently conducting assessments on buildings and other infrastructure that may have sustained damage or more severe impacts. This includes the Bogo City Provincial Hospital, where patients have been temporarily relocated to tents outside the building. This move allows for a thorough inspection of initial cracks that appeared in 2025 to ensure they have not worsened.

Orong explained, "So far, Bogo Hospital has requested support for structural assessment, so we are sending a team there immediately to evaluate and ensure it is safe for patients. In the meantime, tents are urgently needed, and we are utilizing tents from Medellin that were reserved for Holy Week." She emphasized close coordination with local government units to provide necessary support.

Historical Context and Wider Impact

This event recalls a previous magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Bogo City on September 30, 2025, affecting over 700,000 individuals and resulting in more than 70 fatalities. Meanwhile, in Cebu City, part of a column at the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) building was found separated after the recent quake.

Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak reported that authorities are collaborating with engineers to assess the extent of the damage. The Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) has recommended the immediate demolition of a damaged "false column" covering a downspout, as it poses a high risk of collapsing onto a main road and potentially hitting a primary power line.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the tremors were felt across various parts of Cebu, Leyte, and neighboring provinces, highlighting the quake's broad reach.
