The Department of Health (DOH) has revealed that vaccination coverage in the Southern Philippines continues to face significant hurdles, even after the completion of the Measles-Rubella Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR-SIA) Phase 1 in Mindanao earlier this year. According to DOH Spokesman Albert Domingo, low immunization rates remain a persistent issue in the region, contributing to elevated measles cases.
Challenges in Remote and Conflict Zones
Domingo highlighted that the primary obstacles in Mindanao include geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas, as well as some conflict-affected zones. He emphasized that despite the MR-SIA Phase 1 conducted from January to February 2026, many individuals in these regions are still not receiving measles vaccinations.
Immunization Statistics and Unprotected Children
During the MR-SIA campaign, the DOH successfully vaccinated 2,347,562 children, achieving 82 percent of the target population in Mindanao. However, this effort left 510,547 children without protection against measles, underscoring the ongoing vulnerability in the area.
Measles-Rubella Case Data
The DOH earlier reported a total of 1,627 Measles-Rubella (MR) cases from January 4 to March 21, 2026. The data indicates that the regions with the highest case numbers are the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao with 344 cases, Soccsksargen with 322 cases, and the Davao Region with 163 cases.
This situation underscores the urgent need for enhanced vaccination strategies and outreach programs to address the gaps in immunization coverage and reduce the incidence of measles in Mindanao.
